Top 5 Most Popular Social Networks for Filipinos

People are, by definition, social creatures. Filipinos, however, go a step beyond. It's rare for Filipinos to lose touch with long-time friends, geographical distance, being the only factor to be considered here. With the internet, however, finding long-lost friends in this big world of ours has become simpler, more meaningful and fun.

Most Filipinos who are using at least *one* social network finds that, the new line for communication does NOT actually replace the actual friendships they have, but it complements it. Here's a list of the top 5 most popular social networks for Filipinos.

24Ever - A new-comer, and a still-growing network, with its barkada-centric (circle of friends) design captures the "one-up" spirit of the Filipino. People join 24Ever in groups, and are most likely there to prove that THEIR group of friends have the best fun, best activities, best members ... just the BEST. With its bright, colorful design, it captures the playfulness of groups that join it. It also helps that there's a prize incentive for the group of friends who are deemed "most active uploaders."

Plurk - It's supposed to be a microblogging site, right? But since its initial launch just this June, the microblogging site has exploded into avenues for instant-output of ideas. The social network features are there if you look hard enough: it has a "friends" feature, privacy settings, a "clique" feature and group discussion. Isn't that what social networks are made of? Plus, the karma unlocks are an addictive virtual incentive that will leave you watching your timeline for HOURS.

Facebook - Back in 2006, Facebook membership was exclusive per invite, and it was supposed to be for students in campuses to get in touch with each other. The open platform for application development has spawned several addictive apps that are both fun AND social. If you've never gotten a poke from that highschool crush, or played pirates with your kapitbahay (neighbor), then you're probably not getting the appeal.

Multiply - If social photos are your thing, then Multiply is a little bit friendlier than, say, Flickr? Just the right site to show off those new baby photos for your relatives who are far away. Most Filipino users are finding that setting up online stores THEMSELVES make it easier for them to monitize on their hobbies, and they get to meet new people too!

Friendster - The one that started it all. (In the Philippines, anyway.) Back in 2003, the creators of Friendster noticed surges in traffic in the hours between 3 AM --- which, converted to GMT +8 time, was equivalent to noontime in several South East Asia countries, most specifically the Philippines. It was a big deal --- and it still is now, as some of the people who have gathered hundreds and hundreds of friends in Friendster since it was introduced are still reluctant to leave their groups behind.

Tired, But Happy

Well, for the week, I've attended 3 Christmas parties, and it's not looking like it's going to stop any time soon.

Of the times that I'm not bolted to my chair in front of the computer, I'm standing on a carefully-balanced chair, putting up decorations, or drunk, or playing "I'm a staff member, so I can't have any fun AT ALL!" Which is all for work, of course.

My Buxfer's screaming over-budget over the email. My to-do list on Google Maps seems like some quest in an RPG --- "go here, go back, then go there ... oh yeah, remember to come back."

I may not be the only one --- and I promise, a blog entry will be out hopefully before the "big" holiday days. Which is, without speaking, taking a grand toll on my personal life. I may have been saying less in conversations and talking more online, of replying to plurks, of walls in Facebook, or notes for my 24Ever barkada.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, and I'm not even sure if my friends are getting this, but I'm starting to wear out ... and I'm afraid I'm liking it. :p

Things To Do On The Filipino Internet

As much as browsers, HTML, javascript and flash have changed the surface of the internet, the basic premise stays the same: open a website TO DO something. There are Filipino sites that help you DO several things --- here’s a list of them.

  • Check out the latest news – As much as the future has been depicted to be paperless, we still churn out newspapers; but what if newspapers aren’t available at all? Like for relatives abroad who want to keep up with the latest news --- that’s what online news sites are for. No wonder two of the biggest Filipino news sites are from the papers themselves --- Inquirer.net and Philstar.com.
  • Talk junk – Gossip is a Filipino pastime. Back in the day, when communication was scarce, newspapers and television were the only sources of information about the stars. Now we could IM the URL from sites like PEP and PinoyParazzi to the kumares.

  • Find something to do in a mall – Going to the mall is no easy feat --- when there’s something specific that you’re looking for, like a restaurant, or movie schedule; a pre-planned trip to the mall nowadays is more … methodical. That’s what ClickTheCity is for --- providing a well-compiled directory of establishments, movie schedules among different malls and reviews and opinions, both by the site itself, and the big following that the site caters to.

  • Be healthy – Every country has the right to be healthy. Every country too, deserves one-click information on doctors and establishments who will be able to take care of them, should an emergency arise. RxPinoy carries a philosophy of getting Filipinos informed about illness, while over40andfighting informs the youth, the generation who surf the internet, about what ails their parents. Both of these sites have directories of emergency numbers and physicians who might be right for the job.

  • Play online games - Gaming, as an industry, has grown exponentially over the last decade, and Filipinos aren’t too far behind --- we have Level Up Games, e-games and Typhoon Games to look for when there’s a need for a digital gaming fix. Competing head-to-head to acquire the rights for the latest and greatest online games, these companies are also bringing Filipino youth forming community values.

  • Organize a group of friends – Community, family and friendship are part of a Filipino’s intrinsic set of values. They look out for each other, and would do anything to help a fellow countryman, wherever he may be. This is when you need to balance communication, fun and organization. That’s where 24Ever steps in --- rather than focus on your own social network identity, you are showcasing to the world your important group of friends.

Did this cover all the cool things you could do on the Filipino internet? Do you think I missed some cool Filipino sites? Let me know by leaving a comment.

7 Pinoy Sites That You Arent Visiting Enough Of

Filipinos have been making digital waves on the internet for the last decade now. If you happen to reach the 10, or even 5-year mark online, then you're probably doing something right. (Hosting DOES NOT pay for itself.) But we've transcended the stuck-in-ideas phase now; hatching web projects is easier than ever --- with the wealth of free resources, newly-developed technologies and the hard work of Filipinos who have studied to be known as the hardworking programmers, designers and writers they are now.

Gone are the days when you'd make a site that was good enough to be featured on Digital Tour. (Remember that show?) Ideas are a dime-a-dozen (and other some-such cliche saying) --- the ones that stand out now are the ones that are timeless, self-sufficient and always-growing sites. Here are a couple of what I personally think are the best-hatched Pinoy sites.

Alleba - A "pure" Pinoy search engine and directory that is, impressively enough, maintained by only one person! (correct me on this one) Using a wordplay of his mother's maiden name, (Abella) Andrew dela Serna has pierced the heavens to create his dream from 2001: an all-Filipino web search/directory site. An ugaling-Pinoy (Pinoy trait) is helping out your fellow Filipinos, regardless of where you are in life; that's essentially what he did: he's made the effort in pushing purely-Filipino content out there by adding them to his directory. Additions in his directory then have a better chance of being crawled by the larger search engines.

Byahilo - If there was one word to describe Enrico Dee's Byahilo, it would be: passion. His unquenchable thirst for life has him combining his passion for travel and photography and turning it into Byahilo. When you read Byahilo, you not only get a virtual trip to the best spots in the Philippines, but you also get to find out that he's doing what he loves, and getting away with it. (Quite often, literally, in planes and boats and other forms of transportation)

Pinoy Life At Large - Then again, if you prefer getting to know the Philippines tummy first, Arpee Lazaro's Pinoy Life At Large will help you. Arpie is, in his words, a "foodie by heart" --- he will point out the best and the worst in his crusade for epicurean delights. Aside from that, he is fastly-becoming one of the most prominent bloggers in the country, with his friendly aura of sharing what he knows.

PhilMusic - Online since 1997, PhilMusic has essentially carved out a piece of Pinoy music internet history for itself. Being the longest site online that is solely devoted to Philippine music, PhilMusic has been around to share its gallery of musicians, stream (sometimes exclusive) music online, when information on a local musicians was scarce and few, way before YouTubes, Last.FMs and MySpaces of today.

Over40andFighting - Apparently, not enough people who are over their 40's are aware of the adverse effects of bad habits and vitamin deficiency. Over40andFighting, which just recently got online is helping erase that. With its ad campaign, fun online tests and directories of medical establishments and alternative healing locations, it is doing you, or your tatay a favor by keeping you up-to-date with what's good for you.

TipidPC - There used to be a time when a need for gadgets would have you dressing up and visiting GreenHills. TipidPC has now become the leading online resource for all things PC/tech-related sales, brand-new or second-hand. The site also cultivates a community of brotherhood, with forums that are dedicated to helping the newbie understand just what he's getting.

Connected24Ever - Forget social network groups! The Philippines is about Barkada. Rather than add features that would complicate that simple line of friendship, Connected24Ever focused on creating online groups to share notes and videos with. Because videos are the new story; imagine a friend who is now working overseas, he/she can share stories with people who are living here. Being solely focused on Barkadas mean that being friends online does, in fact, complement being friends in real life --- it merely enhances the medium by which unique perspectives meet. Plus, the quirky design WILL grab you.

How to Detect Lies

The following techniques to telling if someone is lying are often used by police, and security experts. This knowledge is also useful for managers, employers, and for anyone to use in everyday situations where telling the truth from a lie can help prevent you from being a victim of fraud/scams and other deceptions.

Warning: Sometimes Ignorance is bliss; after gaining this knowledge, you may be hurt when it is obvious that someone is lying to you.

Signs of Deception:

Body Language of Lies:
• Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own body the liar takes up less space.

• A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

• Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear. Not likely to touch his chest/heart with an open hand.

Emotional Gestures & Contradiction
• Timing and duration of emotional gestures and emotions are off a normal pace. The display of emotion is delayed, stays longer it would naturally, then stops suddenly.
• Timing is off between emotions gestures/expressions and words. Example: Someone says "I love it!" when receiving a gift, and then smile after making that statement, rather then at the same time the statement is made.

• Gestures/expressions don’t match the verbal statement, such as frowning when saying “I love you.”

• Expressions are limited to mouth movements when someone is faking emotions (like happy, surprised, sad, awe, )instead of the whole face. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved: jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forehead push down, etc.

Interactions and Reactions
• A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often go on the offensive.

• A liar is uncomfortable facing his questioner/accuser and may turn his head or body away.

• A liar might unconsciously place objects (book, coffee cup, etc.) between themselves and you.

Verbal Context and Content
• A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers, “No, I did not eat the last cookie.”

•A statement with a contraction is more likely to be truthful: “ I didn't do it” instead of “I did not do it”

• Liars sometimes avoid "lying" by not making direct statements. They imply answers instead of denying something directly.

• The guilty person may speak more than natural, adding unnecessary details to convince you... they are not comfortable with silence or pauses in the conversation.

• A liar may leave out pronouns and speak in a monotonous tone. When a truthful statement is made the pronoun is emphasized as much or more than the rest of the words in a statement.

• Words may be garbled and spoken softly, and syntax and grammar may be off. In otherwords, his sentences will likely be muddled rather than emphasized.

Other signs of a lie
• If you believe someone is lying, then change subject of a conversation quickly, a liar follows along willingly and becomes more relaxed. The guilty wants the subject changed; an innocent person may be confused by the sudden change in topics and will want to back to the previous subject.
• Using humor or sarcasm to avoid a subject.

Final Notes:

Obviously, just because someone exhibits one or more of these signs does not make them a liar. The above behaviors should be compared to a persons base (normal) behavior whenever possible

Photography Tips

Timing is everything
Remember that food tends to melt, sweat, wilt, dry out, shrink, discolor or sag, so timing is of the essence. Make sure you set the table with napkins, glasses, silverware, flowers, etc. before you bring out your "hero" dish. Then finalize your lighting and make adjustments to the arrangement. When everything is perfect, bring in the food and shoot.

Table setting
Create a simple setting that looks professional and realistic, but doesn’t take away from the food. Try different types of plates, bowls, cutlery, placemats, glasses, and even chopsticks as props to set the scene for each dish.

Lighting
Try to take food photographs with natural light. Shooting near an open window diffused by a white curtain works great.

Composition styles
Move in close
Fill your picture with the subject and keep everything in focus. This will eliminate background distractions and show off the details in your subject. Shooting this close requires
using a tripod to help steady your shot.

Lock the focus
Move in close and focus on a particular part of a dish. This way only part of the food will be fully focused while the background is out of focus or blurred.

Include the table setting
Show off your expensive cutlery, wine glasses, chairs and table settings. Simply move far enough away to take an entire table shot with the food as the highlight.
For this type of shot, natural light works best. If natural light isn’t available, bounce light off white walls or ceilings to minimize reflections or glare off the plates, cutlery and glassware.

Editing your food photos
After your food photo shoot, there is a good chance you'll need to adjust the brightness or contrast, crop the image, or touch up other details

Calories for dummies

What in the world are calories and why are they here? We need them, but we can’t have too much of them. They’re healthy and unhealthy at the same time. But they don’t even really exist as the word itself is just a form of measurement. So why are many people obsessing over their calorie count? And why do some people don’t even know what they are? Why are fast-food joints taking so much heat on producing food with gazillions of them? What is it really all about? Today, we hope to clear all misconceptions and set the record straight. We’ve abridged most of the things to know about calories, broken them down to the simplest terms and came up with this concise, but highly informative, FAQ.

1. What is a calorie? A calorie is a unit of energy. It is recommended that we consume a regular amount of calories on a daily basis for us to function. Different kinds of foods contain different numbers of calories. Here are the basics: one gram of carbohydrates contains four calories, one gram of protein also has four and one gram of fat equals nine calories.

2. Can a person just have one source of calories? Yes, a person can but they shouldn’t. A balanced diet is always suggested. Ideally, about 50 percent of the calorie intake should come from carbs, 20 percent from protein and 30 percent from fat. However, fat is tricky. We should consume fat from monounsaturated sources. Otherwise is unhealthy.

3. What happens to calories? When we eat, food is broken down by the digestive system and is either used up through cellular and physical activities. When we walk, breathe or just move any part of our body, a small amount is being burned. The unused energy is stored as body fat. Roughly 3,500 stored calories equates to a pound of body fat.

Think Twice

Think TwiceWhich college will I choose?, What course would I take in college?, what college offers this(your desired course) course?, what course is this?

On my own opinion it does not really matter what college you were into, but lets face the fact that there are companies who would prefer graduates from the popular schools Such as: Ateneo, De La Salle, UST, UP, etc. it's a BIG plus points for them if you graduate in their preferred colleges.

It really does not matter what college you choose, if you excel in your studies, if you show your effort just to get the job you desire, if you are good in dealing with other people, you are active, you work very neat, why would not the company hire you. its your choice on what college you like choose, whether you are loyal to your school(if they have college), or green/blue blooded family, or you like to enroll on your dream school.

It's your own choice on what course you like to take, here are some of the Dos & Don'tThink Twice

Don't
- Don't just randomly pick your course
- Don't just get that course because that is the most in-demand course
- Don't just get the course because all of your classmate or your friends (peer pressure) took that course.

D0s
- Read each description of every course
- Analyze and see if the course really fits you
> if you like the course
> if you like the subject matter(sometimes your favorite subject would help you in selecting a course since you enjoy doing that subject).

Is it your passion or just a hobby? That makes the different, if it's your passion you will love your course and will excel on it, if it's only a hobby you might get bored with it in the long run or you might not be interested in it anymore. Think twice before you pick your course...
What they offer

Happy or Not???

Happy or Not??? Are you enjoying your job?
or are you among the others who does not enjoy or like their job???

happy or not

There are a lot of people who are not happy with their job, or shall I say who does not enjoy doing their routine(job); they are just doing their job because that is related to the course they got in college, which a lot of us think that this course (course that you take) can give you good career or lead you to a successful life, others may think that "I enrolled in this course, because this is the demand in this generation, and also others are taking the course just because their parents want that course for them. parents want their children to be like them or parents want his/her child to do business with them under one corporation or business.

Not all dreams will come true, you always dream to be someone, someone that you want to be in the future(i.e. doctor, lawyer, etc.), but the question there is: is it your passion?, do you think you'll enjoy in that career?, will you have fun in the specific field you are taking? these are some questions you should consider before you choose a specific course that you will be taking in college. because what you take will dictate your future. choose your career carefully, so that you won't regret in the future.

Say cheese!!!

Why is there a lot of people who really loves to take picture of themselves?, When the camera is focused on them, they immediately post and smile(say cheese)?

Say CheeseI have friends who really loves taking picture of herself, their cellphone is full of their picture, even their computer... when my camera is with me, some of them keeps bugging me, asking to take their picture or to take picture with them... one day I ask some of them, have you ever thought in joining a contest??? they told me that we would never win, to join a contest a person should be tall and beautiful and I told them that's not the only criteria to win in a contest, there is a lot of things the judge are looking for a person to win, since you all have a beautiful hair why don't you join a contest, I heard that the Pantene has a promo Entitled "Dare to be the Most Beautiful" and I am encouraging my friend to join the contest.

Pantene Dare to be the Most BeautifulI wrote this blog to encourage my friends to join, so if they are reading this right now here is how to join:

Chowking Bloggers Event

I know that we Filipinos love RICE , that our meal won't be complete without rice...

Every time I eat at Chowking i usually order their Chicken lauriat or sometimes I order an extra Beef Chao fan to complete my meal since I also love rice, because my meal won't be complete without it...

yesterday June 25, 2008 I was able to join the Chowking Chao Fan blogger's event in Chowking Eastwood Branch , and given the chance to taste thier different Chao Fan (beef Chao Fan, pork Chao Fan, yang Chow, & spicy Chao Fan) with toppings (lumpiang shanghai, eggs, siomai, fried dumplings)...
I arrived there around 3:30PM together with my friends... we walk around to look for Chowking... and ask the Concierge where to locate it and both of them gave 2 different direction (wondering which direction is the right path???) oh, well... let me share my experience with you.

as we arrived in the venue, the Sponsors (Chowking & Yehey) warmly welcomed us. the event is full of interactive activities, we had the opportunity to ask the manager some questions, we played games which are fun, and of course the main part of the event CHOW TIME.... as always, as I eat I extract the ingredient of the food (just for fun).

all kinds of Chao Fan "Iba ang Kain pag kanin"

IBA ANG KAIN PAG CHAO FAN: A Chowking Treat

Good day!
